Part 1: State of Hawaii Mandatory Firearms Training
The State of Hawaii requires individuals intending to acquire a firearm to obtain, (from their county’s chief of police) a “permit to acquire a firearm” commonly referred to as a “permit to acquire” (PTA). Before applying for a PTA, you must have an “affidavit of completion” from “A firearms training or safety course… conducted by [an] instructor… verified by the chief of police” (ref. Hawaii Revised Statutes §134-2)
There are two types of Permit to Acquire:
(1) Permit to Acquire a Handgun – Requires an approved firearms safety course
(2) Permit to Acquire a Long-gun – Requires an approved firearms safety course or a hunters education course
Note: If you are entering the State of Hawaii with firearms that you already lawfully possess; you are not required to obtain a “permit to acquire” or take any of the mandatory training courses required for submitting a PTA. However, you will have to present those firearms to your counties police department within five days of arrival in the state.
